4–10 October 2026

Competition events, end to end

Highlights

This week Blocks Code got full competition events, end to end: organizers run them in Administration and students compete in Studio. The week covered 4 to 10 October 2026: about 230 commits in Administration, 40 in Studio and 1 on the website.

  • Competition events: competitions now hold events. Organizations, teams and solo competitors can join them, and each event has its own clock, scoring and results. Students see a competition mode in every editor.
  • Feedback levels: an event can show competitors full results, partial results or none while it runs.
  • Tolerant judging and review: drawings can pass within a set pixel tolerance. Competitors can flag a failed test case, and reviewers decide flags from a review queue.
  • Licenses: organization roles now need a valid license. New organizations are created with a license key, and users without an organization keep a free tier.
  • Report a problem: logged-in users can send a problem report from the header menu, and superadmins triage reports in Administration.
  • Studio shortcuts: run and save use the same keys in every editor, and the header menu lists all shortcuts.

New features

Studio (students and teachers)

  • Competition mode in the editors. The event picker shows competitions by name. Students can create, join and leave teams in public events, or join a solo event with one click.
  • Competition cards on the home page. These replace the old event banner. The banner can also be shrunk into a floating badge.
  • Event details page. It lists the event's problems and codes, the team's scores, and the competitor's own submissions for each problem.
  • Flag a failed test case. Competitors can flag a failed test case with a comment. Results that were accepted within tolerance are labelled as such.
  • Feedback levels. When an event limits feedback, submission results are hidden or partly hidden.
  • Problem statement shortcuts. F4 shows or hides the problem statement, Shift+F4 switches it between docked and floating, and F9 toggles fullscreen in the floating window. The floating window now fills when it opens.
  • Same run and save shortcuts in every editor. A list of keyboard shortcuts is now in the header menu.
  • Report a problem from the header menu, for logged-in users.
  • Pybricks: DriveBase use-gyro block. The default program now has it turned on.
  • Angle blocks take any whole degree.
  • License message. Members of a locked organization see a message about the license.

Administration (organizers, mentors and admins)

  • Competitions rework. A competition holds an ordered list of problems and one or more events. Problems made in the wizard are linked in PDF order.
  • Events page. Filter, create and edit events. The event drawer manages organizations and teams and shows a live deadline countdown.
  • Four event types. Events can be run by organizations or open to users, with teams or solo. Public user events have teams with join codes.
  • Event results in three scoring modes, with an organization filter and visibility rules. Results and the review queue refresh every 10 seconds.
  • Feedback levels per event, applied while the event runs and after it closes. Event problems are reserved from practice until the event closes.
  • Tolerant judging. Each event sets a judging mode, a pixel slack and a tolerance. The event view modal has a fullscreen mode, clickable results and a review tab.
  • Review queue. It shows each team's latest submission per problem, 20 rows a page. Review cards are decided on the spot and show the drawings. Confirming a tolerance acceptance saves the drawing as a variant, and a variant accepted by mistake can be removed.
  • Licenses. A license renewal page and a grace-period banner. Expired keys are refused.
  • Users without an organization. They get an activation page and can create an organization with a license key.
  • User reports. A report a problem entry in the Account menu, and a superadmin list with filters, a details drawer, triage and delete.
  • Superadmin user roles. Superadmins can manage a user's organization memberships and roles from the users panel.
  • Organization search by name in the event invite form.
  • Workshops. Review badges on result cells, icon-only table actions, and a team icon for attendance.

Website

  • PDF download for the second Logo book.

Fixes and improvements

Studio

  • Submission cooldown. The same code can be submitted again only after 30 seconds, with a countdown. Reloading the page does not reset it.
  • Saving locally no longer keeps the Logo driver code in the file.
  • Soldered blocks: the default workspace is valid again.
  • Notifications all use the same style now, and the problem statement modal's button titles are translated.
  • Flag dialog: the comment's character count no longer overlaps the buttons.

Administration

  • Event deadlines are capped at the event window's end. Moving the window end earlier shortens running clocks. Starting near the window end shows how much time is left.
  • Workshops count and show only practice submissions, in the attendance report and the submission modal.
  • Submissions can be read only by their author, organizers, organization admins and workshop mentors.
  • Reviews are kept after a flag is dismissed, a variant is added or a test is re-run. Image matching is more reliable.
  • Review queue names the submitter, labels unnamed teams by their members, and keeps the open submission and scroll position after an action.
  • Organization names need at least 3 characters. License keys are checked when an organization is updated, as they are on create.
  • Organization admins only can add test case output variants.
  • Error responses: a request without a login now gets 401, and reading another user's code gets 404 instead of an error.
  • Admin app stability: event drawer tabs, the roles drawer, season row buttons and user report paging no longer show stale state or miss clicks.

Content and documentation

  • Studio user guide: a new chapter on competition events, in English and Croatian, including the My submissions button.
  • Administration docs: a manual for the four event types, plus pages on competitions, teams, scoring, feedback levels, tolerant judging, the review queue and flags.
  • Licensing docs: license-based access, the free tier and organization activation.
  • User reports: the API, who can do what, and the admin triage page.
  • Authorization matrices updated for the competitions rework.
  • Website: the second Logo book is available as a PDF.
